 About the Author
COLONEL JOHN B. STANLEY was born in Brooklyn. He attended
grammar and high school in New York City. He studied at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute for
one year before entering the United States Military Academy in 1930. After graduation from
the academy in 1934 with a B.S. degree, he was assigned to the infantry.
Following service with regiments in this country and Puerto Rico,
Colonel Stanley was ordered to the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and graduated
in 1940. He then returned to West Point as an instructor in the Department of English and
Assistant Public Relations Officer.
Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, Colonel Stanley was
assigned to the War Department in Washington. He held this assignment, interrupted by six
months' temporary duty in the Middle East, North Africa and England, until early 1945,
when he was sent to the European Theatre of Operations. For his services as a member of
the War Department General Staff he was decorated with the Legion of Merit.
