CadetStuff Features

Shawn Stanford, Features Editor

It's a Korean cook out! Throw another dog on the barbie! Isn't summer wonderful? But before you run down to the animal shelter looking for a tender, juicy terrier, check out the action in this month's features: See what goes on at Summer School on Day One, learn some Phase IV leadership from Capt Matt Heusser, pick up the next installment in the British Air Training Corps saga and find out who's the leader of the club from Capt Stanford! Oh, what a lovely tea party!

Use the schwartz, Luke.(or whatever your name is) But, before you go trotting off to catch Attack of the Clones, take a few minutes to lift our force-ful collection of articles out of the swamp, Yoda-style... We've got Midshipman Darth Elliott with the second part of his article on the Imperial Cadet Corps; C/Lt Col Leia Hornbach tells us about Rebel Alliance training at Hawk Mountain; Grand Moff Hoyza continues his reign of terror with Part 9 of his series on leadership and our features editor explains the perils of not cleaning the squished Rebels out of your AT-AT's feet. Don't miss it!

Let me buy a vowel because "O" my gawd! We've been at this a year! And, of course, any anniversary makes you want to consider your successes and mistakes... And speaking of mistakes, look what's up for this month: Mid Elliott talks about his alma matter, the ATC; Editor Shawn Stanford talks to a CAP Cadet who done good; Dr. Davida Kellogg returns with an ethical gem; Cap'n Hoyza builds a squadron; TFO Chris Morris talks about being Cadet commander; Pararescueman TSgt Bill Preble wants you to do the Right Thing and last - and least! - our intrepid Mangling Editor shares his thoughts on wasting a year cleaning up behind spacedog!

In like a lion, baby! Roar! Out like a what? Did you just call me a sheep? Do I look fluffy and Easter-like to you? Do you want to eat my legs with mint jelly? I didn't think so... Now, if you're done, turn your attentions to our March 2002 issue with delicious tidbits from our kebab-o-knowledge: Catherine York turns reality-TV into real lessons; Lt Col John Knowles talks about training up a Cadet staff; Capt Heusser talks about problems with experts, C/Capt John Paul Andree III discusses the value of planning and read all about the trials and tribulations of the CadetStuff team on the rocks with part two of our Winter Hawk article!

Get me off this crazy thing! Jane!! Sure, the Jetsons was the future, but we return to the past at Hawk Mountain and freeze our butts off just for your enjoyment. Captain Heusser continues to amaze and delight and Major Kirt Bowden debuts as a CadetStuff contributor with something he warmed over from the glory days of the "The CAP Officer". Hey, if you gotta steal, steal from the best!

And in the center ring, ladies and gentlemen!! Watch in amazement as the incredible Scott Matthews brings us his new videos while he dances upon the high wire in nothing but tights and PC-based editing system! Gasp in awe as LtCol Michael Marra gives his views on the value of competence while he is fired from a cannon! Wince in pain as Matt Heusser discusses "Command and Staff" while being gnawed by a hungry tiger! Laugh hysterically when Kurt Cepeda unloads hundreds of tips for writing your resume from a teeny tiny clown car! It's the greatest show on earth!

Who said it could be December already? Cap'n Hozya has another leadership gig happening. We even went to the Air Force for some leadership tips. Our own Capt Stanford explains away his marital bliss in the holiday season. We may even have a little holiday surprise waiting under the tree for you come December 25th. Get that shopping done early!

Mashed potatoes or CadetStuff-ing? Pass that CadetStuff and don't forget the gravy! How about a little cranberry sauce, too? What the heck is a 'cran' anyway, that these are the berries of it? Well, for those of you who are contemplating the mysteries of the universe, go somewhere else. The rest of you: follow me!

ROCKtober! Who came up with that, anyway? And 'Rollvember'? What's up with that? At any rate, CadetStuff dishes up the next in our continuing series of articles about the 2001 National Cadet Special Activities with a profile of the National Ground SAR School Advanced Course. Capt Matt Heusser continues his piece on leadership styles - what sign are you? Plus a gallery of photographs taken by Capt Bob Morgan, USAFR at the Advanced PJOC school. Rock ON!

Labor Day! And we've been laboring mightily! Check out our profile of the National Military Music Academy, our article on Cadet Honor Codes by Dr. Davida Kellogg, our profile of the good professor, the start of another series by Capt Matt Huesser and a discussion of leadership and a piece on the responsibilities of leadership by LtCol Ed Wilson.

CAP National Boards! Holy smokes: they let us out of the basement! Well, they let the highly presentable C/Maj Mike Crockett out and he's gone to the CAP National Boards in Cincinnatti. Join us every day of the boards for an update.

It's the dog days, baby! And CadetStuff is hot hot hot! Yep, our daggone A/C is broken. But hey, man, we never need a fan because we're eternally cool. Oh yeah! And tripping out of our Arctic fingertips is the final installment of Matt Heusser's series "Board of the Rings". Loaded on the dog sled behind that is C/LtCol Dan Upshaw's report from COS. There's a nicely roasted chestnut from The CAP Officer. Look, we've got 100 cool reasons not to leave Wittman Field, Wisconsin, even for a minute. And is that Santa criss-crossing the country?  Heck, no! Its Scott Matthews wrapping up Scott's Big adventure. We're feeling mighty frosty here, can winter be far behind?!

Who said it could be July? What, with that minor fireworks incident affecting our typing ability, we're not even ready! Well, who said putting out a month internet 'zine was easy? Oh yeah, that was us... At any rate, We have the second part of Capt Matt Heusser's interminable article on Promotion Boards and Cadet performance standards. Did we say interminable? We meant invaluable. Honest!

June! CadetStuff Features is up for a night on the town with three articles that will make your mouth water - or maybe your eyes. Anyway, USAFA cadet James Naugle talks about working to enter the Academy, Capt Hugh Stewart talks about working to survive becoming a Senior and Capt Matt Heusser talks about working to improve promotion standards.

May already? Well, it just so happens that we're ready! The Soviets aren't the only ones with a May Day parade. We've got a parade of articles lined up and ready! Check out our interview with MSgt George Miller, C/Maj Mike Crockett's thoughts on Blue Beret, LtCol Ron Padavan's analysis of how to keep the folks you recruit and Maj Bob Haase's analysis on creating a successful and happy unit.

Again With the Video!? Capt Scott Matthews, the Cecil B. Demille of CAWG, has struck gold with this incredible encampment commercial that every potential encampment cadet should see! In this "mid-cycle" add on to the April Features, we bring you an exclusive look at the Scott's latest production.

April 2001: For our inaugural issue, CadetStuff is pleased to present  an interview with the creator of the 1999 California Wing Cadet Encampment video, Captain Scott Matthews. We also have a leadership lesson from LtCol Ron Padavan of Michigan Wing.

Squadron Alert!: CadetStuff staff member Major Darin Ninness has uncovered a novel written about Civil Air Patrol in 1954 - the Golden Age of young adult adventure novels. Every two weeks a new chapter will be added to CadetStuff:Features for your enjoyment. Follow Cadet Tom Carroll and his adventures in the Civil Air Patrol!
