Rope?!
As it turned out: the Cadet in question had shown up for Winter School completely unprepared. His gear consisted of LBE and a couple of trash bags containing his food and his sleeping bag. The Hawk Mountain Staff did their best to get him squared away rather than sending him home. They supplied him with the ruck and the rope and kept a close eye on him during the training.
The real question is, of course: didn't he read the equipment list? Since every attendee was required to turn in a Form 60, his commander must have signed off on it. Why didn't his unit commander make sure he was ready to go before approving his participation?
