All the old garbage you can handle!

:: It's MarchStuff!
Hallelujah! New stuff! ... And like the mother birds we are, we've regurgitated some tasty half-digested goop for our little chicks! Mmm, yummy! ... First up, John Knowles, businessman, raconteur, gourmand, and all around cool guy, tells us that everything he ever learned about being an executive he learned as a CAP officer. Wow! The stuff we learned as CAP officers almost landed us in juvie, not the boardroom. Better take your cue from him. ... Next up is an article by John's daughter, Cadet Rachel Knowles. Erudition seems to run in the family! (Let's hope the moustache doesn't!). ... Lastly on the articles, USAF Lieutenant James Naugle takes the good time and energy to tell us all exactly what it is that the Air Force does all day. He claims that complaining about the cable being out isn't part of the job. Who'da thunk? ... Plenty of stuff for you drill mavens! The Doctor tightens up a shot group or two by dispensing scrips on attaining 40-inch distance, counter march, the pass in review and something called 'opening ceremonies'. Open wide and say 'Ahhh...', cause this'll only hurt for a second! ... Finally, a link sure to please: the web site of a Soldier-cum-filmmaker with an extra treat for CSers! Check it! ... And now, little chickadees, it's time to spread your tiny wings and fly away. Fly, little birds! Fly! Wait! Look out for the CAT! Oooh, that's gonna leave a mark...
Drill :: Visualize a 40 Inch Distance...
Dr. Drill, What is the proper way to teach cadets how to "visually establish a 40-inch distance" when the flight is in falling into formation? Some Air Force drill instructors require the element leader to hold up their right arm and touch the shoulder blade of the element leader in front of them to establish the distance; however the measurement of this distance is not 40 inches. Drill :: Counter march?
Dear Dr. Drill, Is the command Counter, MARCH, ever given in the Civil Air Patrol? I think it is also referred to as Counter Columns March. Sincerely, Cadet Ethan Zitzman Continue reading
Links :: ZerechakFilms.com
Filmmaker Jeremy Zerechak went to Iraq with his Pennsylvania Army National Guard unit in 2004 and was assigned to the Iraq Survey Group looking for weapons of mass destruction. On his site (ZerechakFilms.com) is teaser for his upcoming film about his unit's deployment: "Land of Confusion". (Warning: there is some PG-13 rated language in the clip.) After seeing that one, check out his contributions to YouTube for a laugh. Oh, and look for CadetStuff staffer Shawn Stanford in two of the clips! (We'll leave you to figure out which two.)
Drill :: Passing on the left...
Dear Dr. Drill, I have been asked to call commands for a parade this weekend for a state militia, (army division). I was involved with a marching unit in the US Air Force about 30 years ago. I have forgot most of what the people in my command will ever know, however, the more I read the more confused I am. Continue reading
Leadership :: Everything I Need to Know About Being an Executive I Learned as a CAP Cadet Part II - The Art Of Delegating
Vette 1.jpgGreat leaders learn early on that they have to trust and support subordinates to take on tasks and accomplish the mission. They need to provide support, take the blame is the wheels come off, and publicly heap large amounts of praise on the people who made it happen. Counsel the subordinate privately if they screw up and help them to learn from their mistakes. Continue reading
Drill :: Ceremonial Confusion...
Hello Dr. Drill, A quick question. I am the Cadet Commander for my unit, and there is some confusion about opening ceremonies. Can you go over this real quick? Christian Chung Continue reading
Leadership :: Armstrong Essay - Micromanaging, not Motivating
rachel_knowles.JPGA great leader once said "Leadership should be more participative than directive, more enabling than performing." This statement summarizes both the traits most often found in a good leader, and the mistakes many poor leaders often make. Continue reading
Features :: So, what is it that you Air Force guys do..? (Part 1)
When I was a basic cadet at CA Wing's encampment in 1996, we had an Air Force Structure, Mission, and Heritage class. It was about 3 hours long, and the only thing I remember from it is that it made me want to gouge my eyes out. I want to teach you about the Air Force... Continue reading
