All the old garbage you can handle!

:: It's Augtember!
Augtember? Yeah, well, we're not quite willing to admit that we sort of frittered away an entire twelfth of the calendar, so we came up with a new name to assuage our guilty consciences. Typical CadetStuff: weeks behind schedule and two hundred percent over budget! Well, let's not dwell on our shortcomings (we're getting enough v!agra adds in the mailbox already!), let's get down to bidness! ... First up: our new Leadership Editor, George Berghorn, pleads... No, he begs... Wait, that's really groveling.. for more content. Square him away, willya? ... What is it with you people and drill? You little weasels can't seem to get enough of what the Doctor is prescribing. Maybe we should just change the name of the place to DrillStuff and get it over with. In the meantime, well, just go ahead and read'em, okay? ... Cadet Mark Symonds continues to squeeze out a fine vintage in the next part of his article on MAWG encampment. Just remember: We'll serve no whine before it's time! ... These MAWG Cadets have plenty to say, apparently! To give us a glimpse of how the other half lives, Cadet Joshua Bemis crafted an article of his own experiences as a staffer at the MAWG encampment! What are the chances? ... We don't know how many times we've heard peope say 'CAP blows'. You too, huh? Well, now we know exactly what they mean! See how the winds of change blew a young Cadet onto a completely new course: read Christin Bonnett's article about how CAP changed her life. ... When Spaatzen Allison Thompson sits around the house, she sits around the house, if you know what we mean. She weighs in here with a simple thought: If everyone thinks the same, nobody is thinking very much. Yeah, that's what we all thought, too! Anyway, check out her article on Groupthink. ... This month's hot link? Dare we say it? We dare! We dare! Folks, we love Battlestar Galactica, and you will too!. ... Well, that's about it for this outting, Kids. We'll see you next year! Uhh... Month, we mean! Yeesh!
Links :: Battlestar Galactica!
tumb-battlestar-galactica.pngOkay, we admit it: we're geeks. But the reimagined version of that staple of 70s cheese, 'Battlestar Galactica', isn't just for geeks. Nope, the pilots are way too hot, the subplots are way too subversive and the relationships are way too twisted for this to be just geek-fare. Not that the spaceships aren't cool and the special effects aren't state-of-the-CGI-art; the are. But if you come for the space battlesand eye candy, you'll definitely stay for the intrigue. The third season of one of television's best shows, Sci-Fi's Battlestar Galactica, starts in a few of weeks. That gives you time to get the first couple seasons on DVD and camp out in your room catching up. Dude: What are you waiting for!
Leadership :: Will Work for Content...
berghorn.jpgIt seems like everyone wants content these days. Just look around the Internet and you'll see the various and sundry blog sites and E-zines that want your thoughts. Heck some will even pay. Then look at what's actually offered up out there - some if good, very good in fact, but much of what's available to the www faithful is just a random collection of thoughts and mutterings. Features :: How Did the Civil Air Patrol Change Your Life?
Cadet Bonnett.jpgBeing a Cadet in the Civil Air Patrol has taught me that leadership can be a good thing when used in the right way. I’ve learned that "You can't be a leader if you don't learn to follow first". Leadership begins with followership. This is probably the hardest, but most important lesson that you ever learn. My first exposure to this concept was like a big slap in the face. Continue reading
Leadership :: Groupthink means 'no think'!
allison-thompson-head.jpgOther leadership principles, no matter how reasonable, are rejected. This is how groupthink becomes self-perpetuating. Cadets rising in the ranks emulate the groupthink because that's all they've seen. They justify their actions by saying, "That is how we have always done it." Continue reading
Drill :: Kickin' Drill Old School...
Dear Dr. Drill, Approximately forty-three years ago I was a cadet on the California Wing Drill Team. We would perform all over the state doing exhibition drills in what was then called "Monkey Drill". We would do all types of routines. Continue reading
Drill :: So, more flair?
Dear Dr. Drill, I am preparing a Flight Drill Instruction Guide for next year's encampment and came upon a question that I could not answer with confidence. What is the position of the guide when halted in inverted column formation? Continue reading
Drill :: A Real American Hero!
Doc, I am a Patriot Guard Rider, and we are at military funerals with our American flags. Some of us hold the flags, some of us have longer poles so that we can set the pole on the ground, and still have flag in front of us (we may stand for long periods of time). I am not sure what about the attention command when holding a flag, and what might be correct when a flag is on a longer pole that is sitting on the ground. Any insight would be appreciated. Activities :: MAWG Encampment 2005 - The Renegade Version, Part 1
Our squadron first sergeant was the grouchiest person I have ever met. It didnt help one bit that morning when walking into chow hall, I was 'randomly' selected for a personal greeting from her and the other staff. That was horrific. By the time I made it inside, I was a broken and bitter shell of a Cadet. Continue reading
Activities :: This One Time At Encampment... (Part 3)
There was a DJ, some lights, a dance floor, and a couple barrels of soda. Since I didn't know my OI, I spent the first half rewriting my chain of command trying to get it in my head. Then Jonathan Spanks came along and made me put it away. (I know you sent him, Erica.) For the second half, I was draining cans of diet caffeine-free Sprite and talking with Palombo. Even though it was the social, he only scared me more. Plus, all the good soda was gone. Continue reading
