April 2003 Archive

All the old garbage you can handle!

:: It's April!
...And CadetStuff.org is two years old! ... No self-serving retrospective this year, though! This time our Mangling Editor has a challenge for you, our readers! ... War is an awful thing - no doubt about it. But it would be even more awful if there weren't some limits on our behavior. Professor Davida Kellogg returns with the second part of her discussion of the Laws of War. ... Dr. Drill returns with a vengence, dolling out wisdom and a couple boots to the head! ... Our Man Hannibal is declared Lord of the Ducks in this month's "Drummond Island: Declassified"! ... Wowsers: two links! First up is a nifty-shifty site dedicated to the Lockheed Blackbirds. Second is the story of a true madman, his love for his kids and his love for MechWarrior! ... Wander into the CadetStuff store for our latest toy, the CSL-101A, Drill Sergeant In A Box (it is April, after all!) ... Our own Shawn Stanford points out that Cadets shine up just fine even if you don't break them down first. ... Finally, it's time to dust off the archives: see what was up in our first issue! If you haven't delved back through CadetStuff yet, it's a good time to start!
Drill :: Sherman, set the Wayback Machine...
Yo Peabody! I was recently promoted to Flight commander at my squadron. At the same time, THe squadron commander promoted someone to Cadet Commander way out of turn (a SAmn when their are officers in the squadron), thus sending the entire squadron into chaos. In the two years since my promotion, I still have not been able to find answers to these two questions and/or no one knows the answers to these two questions. Where does the flight sergeant stand during formation? and What does the Flight Commander report to the First Sergeant during opening formation? Continue reading
Links :: SR-71 Online
SR-71 Online is more than just a web site: it bills itself as "An Online Aircraft Museum". It hosts hundreds of military aviation images, including over five hundred of the Lockheed Blackbirds. For you serious aviation geeks out there: it also boasts online images of every (available) page of the recently declassified SR-71 Flight Manual. No matter what your favorite flavor of Blackbird - A-12, YF-12, or SR-71 - there's a ton of info about it here!
Ethics :: Law of War
In my last column, I hope I showed you that, in spite of certain popular opinions you may have been hearing a lot lately, there can be such a thing as just war, and explained the first set of conditions, called jus ad bellum, or justice in going to war, that must be met for a war to be considered a just one. Links :: Weekend (Mech) Warrior
Here's another one of those cool links that has absolutely nothing to do with anything. Here's a detailed description of the trials and tribulations of building a backyard tree fort for your kids in the shape of a mech! Mechwarrior afficionado Jim brought home two big packing crates with the intent to build his kids a fort. Whoops. Sorry, kids. The fort morphed into a tree house which became a freestanding Mechwarrior about 12 feet tall! Wow! Why couldn't we have had a dad like that?
Leadership :: Cadets are not Shoes!
It's coming up on encampment time again, and that means encampment staff training, and that means that it's almost certain that some bonehead at your staff training weekend is going to make some sort of noise about 'breaking down' your Cadets. Continue reading
Drill :: Cue the valkyries!
Dr. Drill, I am the Leadership officer for my SQ. I had a couple of questions for you about four different drills. Can you give me the definitions for Quick Time, Right (left) Flank, Route Step, At Ease March. Thank You, 2nd Lt. Oden Continue reading
Features :: Drummond Island:Declassified - The King
Suddenly, the staff began shouting “All hail King Edward!”, “Grovel, you knaves!”, “On your face, peasant!” , “Long Live King Edward!”, “Drop! You bloody Celts!”, and other helpful advice. Our conditioning resulted in immediate compliance with orders. We all dropped down onto the dusty ground and started saying “Grovel, grovel, grovel”. Even so, we kept our heads up to see what was going on. Continue reading
:: 2 years and counting. Where do we go from here?
This month marks CadetStuff’s 2nd anniversary. Two whole years. It seems like just a couple months ago I was writing the one year retrospective, and now I’m looking back at 2 years of work. I won’t bore you with a rehashing of the last two years here on the site. You can go here and read all about the first year. That’s already on record and I’m far too lazy to retype it.
