All the old garbage you can handle! |

Its January already?
Late? We weren't late! We were delayed en route! Heh heh. But we are talking the journalistic equivalent of encampment chow, so we'll serve it up anyway! ... First, Ranger Hannibal wonders just what the heck is wrong with you people in "Drummond Island:Declassified - The Rebellion". It turns out that even back then Cadets were revolting! ... Lt Col John Knowles does a lot of traveling and has enough frequent flyer miles to take your whole squadron to the moon & back, first class! Check out what he did during a recent trip between flagging the flight attendant down for more peanuts and scanning the crowd for people with suspicious shoes in "The Other Leadership Book by Robert Heinlein". ... Way back when, our own Capt Shawn Stanford got a crazy idea and decided that his Cadet First Sergeant ought to have a clue what he was doing (where he got an idea like that is beyond us!), so he wrote a little song which eventually turned into a three act opera. Well, not exactly. But he's updated his semi-famous"Civil Air Patrol Cadet First Sergeant's Guide" and written a new introduction just for CadetStuff. If you're The Shirt, this thing is da Bomb! ... It turns out that 'ruffles and flourishes' are more than all that lacey stuff on a prom dress: get your downloads for the military pomp and circumstance hit parade from this month's link! ... Dr. Drill is on medical leave this month. He's recovering from surgery to his right arm (he says to improve his salute. We know otherwise) and is having a tough time typing. He'll be back at regular strength next month! ... Finally, CadetStuff has never been above pathetically begging when the cookies in the articles jar run a little low. If you're a chief, you're already sitting on an article! Find out more.

Ceremonial Music Online
Alright, so we missed the Dining Out/Banquet/Party season. That's okay, encampment season is only a few short months away. And when it's here, you're going to need the tunes! Well, check out the free music downloads available from the USAF Heritage of America Band. It has every march, bugle call, anthem and hymn you've ever heard of - plus a whole lot you didn't even know existed. And did we mention it's free? Even if you're not preparing for a visiting general, this is just great music, plus it's free! So what are you waiting for?

Civil Air Patrol Cadet First Sergeant's Guide
Okay, you've been appointed the squadron First Sergeant. You've pinned the diamond on above your chevrons. You've been given an in-box and maybe a drawer in a desk in the Cadet Programs office. And now you stand in front of the formation and report to the Cadet Commander. So what are you going to do now, First Sergeant? What are your duties? What should your duties be? How should you interact with the Cadet Commander? What should be your relationship with the other NCOs? How should you be in front of the Cadets? How do you get along with the Leadership Officer and Deputy Commander for Cadets? This document is not just for the new First Sergeant. It is also written for the Cadet Commander or Deputy Commander for Cadets who’s not quite sure what to do with that new First Sergeant. Hopefully, this will help them to utilize the new resource they have to call on.

The Other Leadership Book by Robert Heinlein
...as I was going through a pile of my old books that one of my kids had taken off the shelves, I came across another early Heinlein book, Space Cadet. Space cadet, cadetstuff… I instantly saw the link and I tossed it into my bag and took it on one of my trips. As I followed the adventures of cadet Matt Dodson, I soon realized that I had found another early example of Mr. Heinlein’s writing that had many principles of leadership that today’s cadet leaders could arm themselves with in order to be better leaders.

Drummond Island:Declassified - The Rebellion
Normally, what everyone wants to know is how to get people to obey. To paraphrase an old friend of mine in the forums, the emphasis always seems to be on bending cadets to the leader’s will instead of trying to lead the cadets. However, to do so goes against the natural tendencies of the teenage cadet.

Hey, Chief! Cough up the articles!
Hmm... Let's see. The Cadet Program requires every Cadet Chief Master Sergeant to pen an essay examining some aspect of leadership. And - how convenient! - CadetStuff has an entire department devoted to articles (essays, if you will) about leadership! I think I smell a synergy!
