All the old garbage you can handle!

:: ITS JULY, and the smell of our summer barbeque is overwhelming!
Over on the left side, next to the hot dogs, we have Part 4 of our series about Britain's ATC! (that's Air Training Corps, chucklehead, not Air Traffic Control!) ... Capt Bob Morgan, USAFR, stokes the flames under the Pararescue Orientation Course with his photo essay from this year's PJOC-New Mexico ... Next to that, over the hottest part of the fire, we've got a passel of stuff on Hawk Mountain: an interview with the PAWG commander, an interview with the HMRS commander and some hints for surviving those other 7 days! You smell that? That's the aroma of smoked cadets ... Former Cadet Arvett Bowen has gifted us with a little fairy tale we like to call "Once upon a time in NC Wing." Let's melt a nice slice of cheese atop this one ... TFO Chris Morris weighs in with part two of his recommendations on fill the Cadet Commander's flight cap. Its pretty yummy with a little mustard. "Pardon me, do you have any Grey Poupon?" ... Knowledge is to leadership like sauerkraut is to the tasty bratwursts over here on the leadership side of our summer grill. We've got a review of a leadership book for ya! Check out "Patton on Leadership". ... Matt Heusser's leadership series continues to serve up leadership lessons like short order cook with three arms! ... The boys up there at Drummond Island sure know how to keep folks cool. Find out why spearmint ain't the smartest thing to make tea (iced or otherwise) out of. ... The folks at MD Wing HQ are no slouches when it comes to finding a cool place to put the CadetStuff URL. ... Here's a cool link, too, to feed the need to surf ... And the whole while, Dr. Drill, the sawbones that he is, keeps telling us why we need to take a Pass on the stuff we're stuffing in our faces. But Doc, we like hot dogs!
Drill :: The Military Salute
Dear Dr. Drill, I’m going to be a squadron commander at my wing’s encampment this summer, and I’m only a c/1st Lieutenant. My deputy commander is going to be a c/Capt by encampment. So you see, I’ll be in a higher position, but my deputy will out-rank me. Who is supposed to salute whom? Continue reading
Links :: SpaceDaily.com
Want to know what's going with NASA's ion engine? Want a look at the soldier of the future? Interested in China's space program? How about the significance of dust on Mars? The latest on black hole science or the search for other worlds? Groovy, huh? Baby, that's just a sample! Other news areas include: EARTH OBSERVATION, TERRADAILY, TECH SPACE, SPACEMART, GPS NEWS, UAV NEWS, EARLY EARTH, LIFE SPACE, THE OUTER PLANETS and NANO TECH! We could go on and on. But instead, why don't you visit the site and see for yourself! SpaceDaily.com bills itself as "Your Portal to Space" and does it ever deliver! Crikey, even the advertisements on this one are cool!
Activities :: Hawk Mountain 2002: Getting the Most Out of Hawk
I love Cadetstuff. I wish there were something around like this when I was a Cadet. A web site like this helps unlock the truth to the secrets and mysteries of activities like PJOC and Hawk. When I was a Cadet, all we had to go on was hearsay and conjecture, which is sort of the truth, but not quite. The guys at this fine site asked if I could do another article on Summer Hawk and I am happy to oblige. Continue reading
Leadership :: Once upon a time in NCWG...
A few years ago, and once upon a time, there was a cadet grade of cadet sergeant. My new assignment was to become our Alpha flight's soon-to-be flight sergeant. What was really going on was my entrance into the world of leadership. Among other things needed for leadership, keeping the crowd motivated and interested is one of the hardest battles to fight in the cadet program. As I stood in front of a flight of cadets, I lost count after ten, the staff stood afar amused at the lack of knowledge I actually had towards this job I was supposed to master in five seconds. Continue reading
Leadership :: Cadet Commander - How To Do It Part 2
So you’ve survived being C/CC for a while now. Hopefully you haven’t gotten the world all mad at you and you still have cadets to lead. If that’s the case, then you’re doing a bang up job. Now, on with the show… Continue reading
Resources :: Book Review: "Patton on Leadership"
In his book, Axelrod focuses on the leadership style of General George Patton and how it relates to leadership and business management. The introduction covers some facts about Gen Patton and his history as a military leader. The book is well organized, with each chapter focusing on a specific aspect of Gen Patton's leadership philosophy. Continue reading
Leadership :: Leading the Way XI: Staff Revisited
Back in issues 5 and 6 I took a look at the meaning of a staff officer. The other day, I read great article on Management by Joel Spolsky that explained his experiences in the Software field. Not suprisingly, he came to the same conclusions as I did. (No, he didn’t come up with any cute phrases like Commander/SuperHero, but he’s pretty close …) So, this month, instead of running my typical column, I’m just going to re-print his. Continue reading
Profiles :: This is the ATC - Part 4 (Joe Bloggs goes Gliding)
Deciding that he likes gliding, Bloggs puts in for a Gliding Induction Course which will get him 30 minutes of flying either in a Vigilant (powered glider) or a Viking (winch launched). He gets the course and attends it at Hullavington, a former RAF base now used by the Army and the gliding school. The aircraft here are Vikings so he gets to know winch launching well. Continue reading
Activities :: Hawk Mountain 2002: Interview with Lt Col Gene Egry
CAP changed my life. Without the leadership and discipline I was exposed to during my cadet years, I have no doubt that I would be where I am personally and professionally today. A key component of my leadership training was Hawk Mt. Ranger Staff Training. I remain in the program because I believe in it. I want to give back something for everything the program gave to me. Activities :: Hawk Mountain 2002: Interview with Col Weiss, PAWG/CC
On assuming his duties, Col Weiss made cleaning up Hawk's image a priority. As an opening salvo, he issued official directives that all PAWG personnel comply with CAPM 39-1 and remove the beloved tabs from their uniforms. While it may not have been as controversial as Gen Shinseki's adoption of the black beret for the entire army, it certainly wasn't received well by everyone. Continue reading
Features :: Drummond Island:Declassified - The Tea
Anyway, one of the younger cadets heard they were giving away free candy bars, so he got in line. The staff asked, "Did you drink any tea?" He said "yes," expecting a nice fat candy bar. Next thing he knows, some big Asian guy in jungle pants and a black commando sweater has two fingers of one hand in his mouth trying to tickle his uvula. The Foxtrot Commander told him "You bite me, kid, and I swear to God I'll kick the crap out of you." Continue reading
