Howdy from Australia, Doc.

Re your answer to 'Jim': You Yanks are way off the mark. You never - and I say again 'never' - salute when not wearing a cap. Read up on your military history and please tell that to George.

vinummy

Dr. Drill responds

Hi, Vinny!

Crikey! I don't know where we Yanks would be without you kangaroo jockeys! We owe so much to the Land Down Under: Kangaroos and koalas? Check! Mad Max? Check! Olivia Newton John? Check! Kylie Minogue? CH-CH-CHECK! Fixing our incorrect and foppish tendency to salute when uncovered? Just a minute there, Crocodile Dundee!

I'm not sure where you got your info, but it's not correct for all of the U.S. forces. The Sea Services - that's the Navy and Marine Corps - don't salute when uncovered, but the Air Force mess dress and Army physical training uniform (two examples) have no cover, yet standard customs and courtesies - including saluting - apply.

Plus, the Prez - who is the Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces - returns salutes and the last President to wear a hat was probably Eisenhower (that's back in the 50's, Bruce).

There has been a fair amount of discussion about saluting here on CadetStuff, but this one deals with the same issue: saluting uncovered.

The good Doctor is always interested in learning other takes on drill and C&C; so, my question to you is why are you so certain about not saluting uncovered?

Thanks for writing!

Caution: Dr. Drill isn't always one hundred percent serious. Please activate your Joke Detectors. And don't call us when you find yourself explaining to a membership termination board why you used a staple gun to keep a cadet's hands at his sides during "To The Rear, March". All we're going to say on your behalf is "Duh!"

And if you find yourself on the bad end of a serious counseling because you decided to go toe-to-toe with your squadron commander over the position of the guide during a squadron-in-mass formation or something similarly trivial, well, we're just going to point, laugh and call you names!
