Military cartoons are a great way for the troops to let off a little steam and poke fun at their situation. Remember Willie & Joe? Classic stuff from the Last Great War! Read on for this month's collection of links (that's plural, gang) to military cartoonists on the Web, keeping it light and fluffy for our troops around the world.
Private Murphy's Law - We've all heard about Murphy's Law: "If something can go wrong, it will." That's a military maxim, and a funny one at that. SFC Mark Baker, however, has reincarnated the ever-pessimistic Murphy as an Aiborne Infantry private. He's been drawing since 1994, and his cartoons have appeared in Ft. Bragg's "Paraglide" and the Army Times, among other places. Hoooah, Airborne.
Ricky's Tour - "Ricky" was a term often applied to any Navy recruits at Great Lakes, regardless of their real name. "Hey, there, Ricky, hit the deck!" Mike Jones has been scrawling cartoons like Ricky since 1991, and his work currently appears in All Hands, the magazine of the Navy, JaxAirNews, and the Mayport Mirror. Now lets all chip in and get Ricky a trip to the dentist to fix those Austin Powers choppers...
Buster's Battery A look at the soft, pliable underbelly of a variety of subjects, not all of which are military, since 1998, drawn by Maj Doc Crabtree. Humor with a military bent, which ain't all that bad when you get right down to it.
Leave out the Corps? Are you kidding? Perish the thought! SemperToons is the Corps' alternative to all those Naval Service jokes, courtesy of SSgt Charles Wolf, USMC. Ooh-rah!
Hey, lets not leave out the National Guard. No, man, this is the Total Force! GuardToons is a wicked, wicked look into the National Guard cartoon mindset from the sharp pen (wait, I thought the phrase was 'sharp pencil'? Whatever!) of the Missouri Air National Guard's own Lt Col Lyle Farquhar.
And, no, we didn't forget the Air Force. We were just saving some of the best for last: W.C. Pope's "Pope's Puns", a collection of Air Force-related cartoons published in Citizen Airman magazine.
There ya have it, gang. Six alternatives to the drivel in your local paper. Sad Sack and Beetle Bailey can't hold a candle to these folks. Pfffft!
